The Exercise Prescription

There is a saying that is 100% true. "There is no such thing as a proper diet without exercise."

Most of us have accepted that fact, but still little of us really abide by it. When most if us feel the need to trim down a bit we first look to change what we eat.

While dieting can produce great results alone, diet and exercise and basically double it. Just think about how much faster your waistline would slim down if you not only started cutting out fats and reducing calories, but also went on a jog that burned off 600 more calories.

Now, if you did that you not only benefit from just the loss of calories, but you get the benefit of gaining muscle. Muscle is the fat burning machine in your body. The more lean muscle you have the faster you body can burn that fat off. They go hand in hand.

There are tons of things that are a lot of fun to do that give you great exercise. I can name plenty, but it is up to you to find one that you enjoy. Most importantly, stick with it. If you take up tennis. Play tennis! Play it 2 or 3 times a week if you can. Or play once a week and hit the pool 3 times a week. It does not matter what you do, it only matters that you do it.

That is the key to success. Get it done. Get out there and sweat.

Another thing that I will highly suggest is strength training. Good ole working out with weights. Strength training offers the most muscle building ounce for ounce. It would take me another 10 pages of writing to list all the benefits of strength training.

while many do not like going to the gym going just once or twice a week would still get you results. Once you get results, you will start liking the gym a little more. I can guarantee that.

I did mention diet before and I would like to make just one simple suggestion. There are so many diet fads out there, so ignore them all. You know what is good for you and what is not. You already know that you need protein after a workout. However, there is one tip that I know for a fact will jump start your results.

Cut your fat intake in half and double your fiber.

This does so much for the body and it is a simple rule to follow.

The Chinese researchers who equated tai chi to a moderate-paced walk also measured its ability to reduce stress. Each group attempted to destress using one of four activities: tai chi, meditation, a brisk walk or reading. By measuring their heart rates, blood pressure and urinary excretion of stress hormones, the researchers were able to track how quickly the participants recovered from the stress. Tai chi turned out to be as stress-relieving as two better-known stress reducers, meditation and walking. Tai chi would be a good choice for someone who enjoys physically active approaches to stress management but may not be able to take a walk.

2. Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most severe form of arthritis. Some two million Americans have this painful, potentially crippling inflammatory joint disease. For other forms of arthritis, it is recommended gentle exercise to help control pain and preserve joint function. But many physicians are reluctant to recommend exercise for people with RA because overexertion can trigger joint inflammation. Tai chi does not. In a study, 20 people with RA practiced tai chi two hours a week for ten weeks without any aggravation of symptoms. The researchers concluded that tai chi appears to be safe for RA patients. They also confirmed that tai chi might serve as a safe alternative to other forms of exercise therapy.

3. Balance

In a study, nine pairs of similar women aged 65 to 85 were recruited. One of each pair practiced tai chi, the other did not. Using sophisticated tests, the researchers assessed the women's postural control, their steadiness on their feet and their ability to remain standing when subjected to destabilizing situations, such as a rocking floor. The tai chi practitioners had significantly better postural control, meaning that they were less likely to fall. This finding has considerable medical importance for those over 65. falling is a common - and serious - problem in the elderly, especially for women with bone-thinning osteoporosis. Osteoporosis makes the bones brittle, and when elderly women fall, they risk hip fractures, complications from which are the nation's twelfth leading cause of death and a major killer of elderly women. Weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, helps control osteoporosis, but as women grow older, fear of falling keeps many from getting the weight-bearing exercise they need. All this leads to a vicious cycle: fear of falling, increasingly sedentary lifestyle and increased risk of hip fractures if they do fall. Tai chi can help the elderly stay on their feet, avoid falling and remain physically active, which promotes overall health and well-being.

Conquering Migraines: Advanced Biofeedback Boasts Permanent Success Rates of 90%

A corporate promotion meant more money and more stress for John R. Unfortunately, his migraines went from occasional to every Saturday morning for 4 months in row. Then they just stopped due to neurofeedback.

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback that works with brain function. I havent had a migraine since my 3rd session. Im continuing the training for a while longer because I dont want to have a migraine ever again.

Migraines normally run in families and Johns siblings get these headaches too. The migraine statistics are dismal. Headaches are the most common complaint physicians hear. About 20 Americans suffer from migraine headaches, but only half of these people call their headaches migraines. Of the 12% of people who get migraines, women are victims 3 to 1 over men.

Symptoms typically include horrible throbbing pain in part of the head. Nausea is common as is a sensitivity to light or sound. The pain can last for hours or days. Migraines may begin in childhood and can last throughout the life span.

An episode often begins after an accumulation of stress and then a release from stress. The ebb and flow of the autonomic nervous system is disrupted and the relaxation wheels grind. The brain stem and trigeminal nerve conspire to constrict blood flow out of the brain. An engorged blood vessel in the brain pounds against a meandering cranial nerve causing the throbbing pain. A visual aura only occurs 30% of the time but for some people that is the primary symptom.

Migraines are usually triggered by an accumulation of idiosyncratic factors. These can range from weather to wine.

Migraineurs are often highly responsible people and somewhat tightly wound. There is little point in telling them to relax. They must first learn how.

Biofeedback has been recognized for decades as an effective technique to aid migraine headache sufferers. The basic method is to teach relaxation with hand warming. Greater blood flow to the hands brings the warmth.

During the fright r flight response, blood moves away from the periphery. The opposite autonomic nervous system mode is rest n digest. Here our skin tone goes from pale to florid.

The biofeedback remedy is trial and error practice in raising your finger temperature by watching a thermometer. The goal is the facility to achieve 94.5 within 5 minutes. This does take diligent practice. Few people keep it up without lots of skillful encouragement. It works for 50% of the people or 50% of the pain depending on what the study measured.

With advances in technology have come efficiency of time. And efficacy in degree and proportion of successful results.

Now there are two kinds of neurofeedback training that have made stopping migraine headaches quite possible for over 90% of those with this debilitating disorder. The combination of methods has not been tested.

Biofeedback begins with monitoring. The first method uses an infrared sensor to detect heat radiation emanating from the forehead.

Why are human foreheads bare of hair? To cool the large cerebral cortex in the front of our skull! Learning to increase blood perfusion to the frontal cortex is acquiring biofeedback control over regional cerebral blood flow. When viewed with infrared photography each session appears to brighten the entire forehead.

Think of infrared training as brain strengthening. Sessions spent raising the infrared temperature seems to stimulate neurocellular activity. The activation becomes greater self-regulation over the cortical migraine generator.

The effect looks like enabling the brain to turn off the migraine switch. More practice at brain brightening gradually builds the ability to turn away a migraine before it gets started without conscious effort. This can interrupt a current raging migraine within 20 minutes. Clients often say It just kinda pooped out.

In the main study of 100 migraine patients, 94% got at least 50% reduction in pain after 6 half-hour sessions. During these sessions, the client looks at either the biofeedback numbers or their favorite movie. Above a moving threshold the movie plays.

The second form of neurofeedback uses an EEG or electroencephalograph to read brain waves. This micro-volt meter detects tiny brain emanations on the scalp and displays the information for biofeedback of brain activity. Every time a neuron fires it is a chemical and an electrical event.

As in all biofeedback, displaying a biological process leads to control of that function. With self-awareness comes self-regulation. All healing is self-healing where self-information is the remedy. The practitioner merely holds up a high-tech mirror and does some coaching. Home training units are now available.

The most advanced forms of brainwave biofeedback requires no special effort. You simply listen to your favorite music. If you want, you can look at a dynamic graphic. The information comes from brief pauses in the music and graphics corresponding to moments of higher brainwave turbulence.

Interrupting a brainwaves surge promotes peace of mind. So does continuous playing of the music during relative lulls in the constant mental storm as read by the EEG. The pauses are set to come often enough to be informative and transformative while still being a pleasant experience. It is like learning to drive a car steadily within the lane when there are rumble strips on both sides. Then narrow the lane. The software has 18 lanes at once spanning the brainwave spectrum.

Neurofeedback makes the central nervous system more internally efficient. Rather than closing down at lower speeds, the mind becomes better coordinated and more complex.

The real problem are the ruts and patterns we develop to over control ourselves. Any fixed brainwave pattern is a loss of freedom, a reduction in flexibility and less resilience for the entire system.

Turning down the idle speed allows a brainwave reorganization and self-repair where extraneous habits are discarded. To drop needless surging is a permanent release. To cease wasting energy is a welcome unwinding that is recognized and retained naturally.

These remedies work to create significant and often total relief for a very high proportion of clients. And when it works, it seems to work for good. Both forms of neurofeedback typically produce permanent freedom from future migraines.

Instant Stress Relief Exercise

Today, I'll show you one simple exercise that will help you reduce stress in only 10 repetitions.

But first...

When does it hit you?

When does stress take control of your upper back and neck and settle into a dull pain that lasts all day long?

Do you at least make it into the office and get a chance to read a couple of emails before the tension drives a nail between your shoulder blades?

Or does it strike 10 minutes into your long drive into work?

I'm willing to bet that if you sit at a desk all day and don't have the proper workstation set-up, that you suffer from chronic upper back tension.

Go ahead, put your hand on your traps and squeeze. Are they rock hard? Do you have your shoulders shrugged up to your ears all day long? Is your computer screen well below eye level, causing your head to slump forward? Do you slouch when you drive, adding to the stress and tightness in your upper back?

Allright, enough reminders of what's wrong with your posture and work set-up. Let's focus on what we can do to fix this...

Because even I'm not immune to it. Yesterday, after 7 training sessions, after answering over 100 emails from readers, and after reviewing several client's programs, the stress in my upper back was beyond annoying, and downright debilitating.

I had to do something about it. And fortunately I knew exactly what I needed.

10 reps of the Y-squat.

The what squat? The Y-squat.

This exercise requires you to contract your rear-delts and use your rhomboids and middle-traps to bring your shoulder blades together and hold them in position for all 10 repetitions, all while stretching the pecs. (Basically, you are holding the opposite position of the posture we tend to assume for the other, oh say, 9 hours and 50 minutes of regular workday).

So after 10 reps of this exercise, taking no more than 30 seconds in total to complete, the stress was gone from my upper back. With that stress relief, and the energy from a simple set of squats, I had a huge swing in motivation. I finished up the program I was working on and headed out to the gym to complete some more bodyweight exercises.

And that was almost 4 hours ago...and I'm still going strong and stress-free, despite being back at the computer working on more of your programs.

Now to learn how to do the Y-squat and get rid of your upper back tension. Add in a set of spiderman pushups or decline pushups, and you'll be stress free for hours.

Myth 1: A high-protein/low-carb diet is the way to weight loss.
